Meditation 101

I created this course after years of engaging in my own meditation practice, becoming a Certified Meditation Teacher, and feeling the desire to help you and other moms to feel more grounded, connected, and self-compassionate, too.

Looking back on my life, I remember hearing about meditation and the benefits of having a meditation practice. However, I never felt meditation was right for me. I was too wound up, my mind was too busy, and I was in crisis a great deal in my twenties. I could not sit still.

Fast forward to motherhood when I soon realized that continuing to live in that state of mind was not only hurting me, but it was emotionally hurting my children. For me, it became easier to engage in the practices that promote calm and well-being when I saw my anxiety reflected back to me from my own children. I decide that I’m impacting my children whether or not I am conscious of it, so why not be the best version of myself for myself and my children?

I started out by playing around with different meditation practices until I found what worked for me. I began with short and simple moving meditations and I built onto my practice from there. I’m happy to say that my nervous system is now calm enough to be able to sit still and meditate, although I still enjoy engaging in moving meditations as well.

What I have also learned as a Licensed Clinical Social Workers is that stillness can retraumatize some people who have experienced trauma by sending them into the freeze response. Most of us have experienced trauma in the past, but only you will know how sitting still impacts you and your nervous system.

During this 6-week group course, I will introduce six different types of sitting meditations along with different breathing practices.

We will not engage in specific moving meditations during this particular course. However, when I teach, I invite you to do what feels safe and comfortable for you. If standing, swaying, or walking during the meditations feels right for you, then I encourage you to do so. This is not a strictly taught meditation course.

Please note that although meditation has been a spiritual journey for me and it is one of my favorite ways to connect spiritually, that is NOT the case for everyone. You will have your own personal relationship with meditation during our time together. You may also choose to go on a spiritual journey, or you may simply want to feel more relaxed, feel better emotionally or physically, or want answers to burning questions you have. No matter what your personal journey may be, it is yours and I will respect it.
